Travel Thursday: Hawaii

Since I'm outside in the cold for work today, I thought it would be nice for this week's travel to again be about someplace warm :-)

I have actually been to Hawaii twice, once when I was in fourth grade and again when I was a junior in college. I got to go in college as a member of the Wind Ensemble because we played in a competition in Honolulu. It was awesome because the only thing I had to pay besides spending money was $100. Sometimes, it really does pay to be a band geek! :-)

The clarinet section

Since I had been there as a child, I already knew several things I wanted to do this time around, number being climbing to the top of Diamond Head. When I was a kid, we went into the crater, but never climbed to the top and it was something I never got out of my head that I wanted to do.

The climb was difficult, probably as much as, if not more so than when I climbed Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. But, it was so so worth it once I got to the top. The views were incredible!

I also made the mistake of getting a bad sunburn the first day we were there! This is actually the trip where I started wearing sunscreen it was so bad.

I matched the octopus,  I was so burnt!

We went to Pearl Harbor and I also got to spend some time with my mom's cousin, who used to live on the Oahu. Susan and I re-inacted the time my mom got stuck in the elevator at the top of the Aloha Tower, explored the capital and went to the windward side of the island, where we explored Valley of the Temples, a cemetery with really cool Japanese architecture.

And of course, what trip to Hawaii would be complete without going to a luau?

What's your favorite tropical destination?

  1. you are one lucky lady! we were supposed to go for my 40th birthday, but sometimes life gets in the way. one of these days. just gorgeous!

  2. Hawaii sounds like a nice place to be right now. I was fortunate too - I traveled with the Notre Dame football team as a manager, when they played Hawaii... Would love to go back -especially because we were so busy with work -it was hard to get away and see its beauty!

  3. Oh my, that lighthouse picture is GORGEOUS!

    xx Kait

  4. How'd you manage that? That trip was the one that convinced me to start wearing sunscreen. That burn was AWFUL!

  5. The trip was awesome. We had a couple hours of rehearsals, played two concerts and spent the rest of the week doing whatever else we wanted. I would so totally do that again!

  6. lol. I have no idea! I just really thought I'd been in the shade when it happened - maybe I really wasn't!

  7. I would love to go back again but my husband says his mom has to go before we can :-)

  8. It was so beautiful up there. I would love to go back!

  9. Those pictures are so beautiful! And I hear you on the sunscreen--I wasn't ever too good at applying it until the first day I became a lifeguard and came home as red as my bathing suit. UGHHH. I'm a believer now!

  10. I wear it whenever I know I'm going to be out in the sun for an extended period now. I never want to get that burnt again!

I love comments so leave me some love!
