Travel Thursday: Vatican City

Right before I came back to the States after studying in England, I took a trip to Rome, Florence and Venice. During the three days I spent in Rome, I spent an entire day exploring the Vatican. I'm not Catholic, but my experience there was very moving. There's just something very mystical about it and as a matter of fact, when we walked up, there was this fog/mist/something around the cross at the top of the dome, almost like a halo. It's something I will never forget.

Did you know that the Vatican is not just St. Peter's Basilica, but an entire palace complex? A large portion of it is actually a museum. In fact, to get to the Sistine Chapel, you must go through the entire museum portion first.

The Colossal Head of Augustus

I have had two experiences in my life where I saw something so beautiful that it left me speechless. The first was seeing the French Alps and the second was seeing the Sistine Chapel. Photos weren't allowed, but I just walked in and stopped with my mouth open. The frescoes are some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I literally sat on one of the benches for probably an hour, just taking in the beauty of it.

I did explore St. Peter's as well and I have a confession to make...I cursed inside! It just sort of slipped out when a tour guide was talking about Michelangelo's Pieta and I still feel horrible about it 11 years later.

I am so glad I was lucky enough to be able to visit the Vatican during Christmas time, there was just something about it. As with almost every church in Europe, I reveled at the architecture and what it took to construct without the technology we have today. These buildings are architecture and engineering marvels. The Vatican is a place you must visit on a trip to Rome!

  2. Italy in general was amazing, but Rome was by far my favorite city I visited. I'm really into Roman archaeology AND had just taken a college course about it so it was awesome to see everything I had just studied.

  3. That looks and sounds like a totally awesome trip! I can't imagine how beautiful it really must be in person!

  4. The would have been a dream trip for me. Everything is so beautiful and amazing and all the stories behind it. Maybe one day when the kids are bigger my husband and I can take a trip like this.

  5. So jealous of all your adventures!

  6. I'm sure you have some of your should write about them!

  7. I would love to go back with my husband. Hopefully you will get to go someday too!

  8. I really enjoyed it. I would love to go back, this time not as a broke college student and be able to travel more throughout the country.
