Travel Thursday: Paris Part III

I had mentioned previously that I spent some time exploring on my own while in Paris. I ventured to several places that weren't some of the more normal tourist places which was really nice because I didn't have gypsies or seagulls bothering me. We called the people that hound you to buy random stuff at places like the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur and Notre Dame seagulls because they always flocked to the tourists haha!

I am such a planner, so much so that I had mapped out everywhere I was going to to and how much time I was allowed to spend there to be able to see everything I wanted that day. Issues much? :-) I went to the Musee National Picasso (which is apparently closed until the end of 2013!) first thing in the morning. I remember that it was in a part of the city that wasn't very touristy and it was really great to be able to see areas that weren't saturated with tourists and get a feel for the real Paris.

I then went to the National Museum of the Middle Ages, which outside of the Louvre was my favorite. I'm a medieval historian at heart and I was like a kid in a candy store here. Photos weren't allowed, but I got to see so many things I had studied, such as The Lady and the Unicorn and the original carvings located on Notre Dame.  The museum is housed in the Hotel de Cluny a 15th century mansion.

I also visited the Pantheon. Bet you thought Rome was the only city that has a Pantheon! It was constructed as a replacement for a previous church and it houses the tombs of many famous French citizens such as Voltaire, Victor Hugo and Marie Curie.

Another place I visited was the Hotel des les Invalides, or as I called it, Napoleon's tomb. The Hotel is actually a building complex and Napoleon's tomb is located in the dome. I remember writing a paper on him in either middle or high school so it was really cool to be able to see where he is buried.

There you have it. My Paris trip in a nutshell. I went to a lot of really neat places, but there is still so much that I would love to see there. Maybe someday I'll get to go again. It's definitely on the travel list!

  1. Those all look like such fun places. I have heard through blogs more than once how people love to scam tourists over there!

  2. oh my goodness! those chotsky peddlers are the worst. we sat for a while just watching at the eiffel tower. you would see them run as a group every now and them to avoid being caught by the cops! you knew a cop was coming when a SWARM ran by! it was hilarious!

I love comments so leave me some love!
