Field Work in Photos

Remember how I mentioned that I was in Illinois for work last week? Well, today I had to do field work again, so I thought I would show you what a day of field work is like in photos. But first, let me explain what I do. I work for a cultural resources consulting firm doing Section 106 work. What that means is that I primarily survey historic properties (at least 50 years old) to determine if they are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. This is only for clients utilizing federal funds or needing a federal permit, for work such as coal mines, wind farms, transportation projects etc. In a nutshell, that is what I do. Due to the nature of my work, I can't tell you exactly where I was, just that it was somewhere in Kentucky.

I almost always start my day out with a visit to Starbucks to fuel my addiction. I used to get it everyday when I worked at Target, but now it's a special treat. Especially when I had a coupon!
Once I got my yummy Cinnamon Dolce Latte, I was on my way. I was a little worried because all the schools were closed due to a winter storm that came through last night...but the roads looked like this:
Oh Kentucky!

Once I arrived at the project area, I got to work, surveying properties.
Horrible picture I know, but under the hard hat I was actually having a really good hair day! I also realized that I should probably put my fleece on because it was cold! Basically, I go door to door and take photos of all structures on a property located withing a certain radius of the project area. Today, I got to see horses!
Once I was finished with the survey, it was time to head to town to grab lunch and go to the courthouse to do property research.
I got lost on the way and had to break out Google Navigation...thank goodness for technology!

I stopped at Fazoli's for lunch and had a yummy pasta dish, Bruschetta Chicken.
I had planned on pumping for Cecily after lunch, but the adapter plug in the car didn't work :( So, I headed on to the courthouse to do property research. Bet you didn't know that that's public record!
Once, I was finished, I crossed the bridge and headed home.
As I was returning the rental car, I snapped this gorgeous sunset...rare for January!

There you have it, a day of fieldwork.
