Financial Peace of Mind During the Holiday Season

Since it's Black Friday I figured I would use this opportunity to mention something that's incredibly important to me personally, especially around the holidays: Financial Peace of Mind. I know that at this time of year some of tend to go overboard with wanting to give our kids everything and losing sight of our financial goals by blowing the budget out of the water - I know I'm definitely guilty of it - then regretting all that spending come January.

I can't believe I'm admitting this on the blog, but we have a lot of credit card debt. We've spent the last couple of years trying to stick to a budget to pay it down and while it has worked for a couple months at a time, we always seem to get back in the habit of blowing the budget away and ruining the headway we've made on paying our credit cards off. Two months ago, my husband and I decided that we had had enough and created a new budget.

We finally figured out that by having a crazy strict budget where neither of us had any "fun" money or money set aside for the kids or eating out etc., then we were setting ourselves up for failure. As a friend of mine said recently, is it a life worth living without taking time to enjoy it? While it may take us longer to pay off our cards, by having set aside a certain amount of money each month for "fun" money, kids' activities, clothes, eating out, vacation, etc., we have found it much much easier to stick to our budget because we're not completely restricting ourselves. In fact, we've been able to pay off $4000 in credit card debt in two months. Has it been easy? Not always. And you better believe I have had my share of complaints about our new budget. But, you have no idea how much of a relief it is to see our balances steadily going down instead of the yo yo of the past few years.

I strongly encourage you to check out Capital One 360's Black Friday Sale and start thinking about your own financial peace of mind during the holidays. 1. Yes! it can be so hard but paying it off is such a relief! We finally made the last payment this month on all the emergency debt that popped up last year. Now it's time to tackle the credit cards again...

  2. We're both just over it. Living paycheck to paycheck stinks, and it's so nice having padding between each paycheck. Two cards to go!
