Travel Thursday: The Everglades

Almost two years ago now, when I was about nine weeks pregnant with Cecily, we went to Naples, Florida for my brother-in-law's wedding. Alan and I had decided to make a vacation out of it since we knew that was the only trip we were taking in 2012 due to me being pregnant. And, since we were so close to Everglades National Park, there was no way I was going to pass up the chance to go. I have wanted to see the Everglades ever since I was little and read a book about manatees.

This alligator was just chillin' along the side of the trail

We took a cruise through the Ten Thousand Islands, which is the salt water portion of the Everglades. It's basically a huge mangrove forest along the coast.

While I didn't get to see any manatees, we did see lots of dolphins, which is just as nice! After the cruise, we drove halfway to Miami to the Shark Valley Visitor's Center, which is in the middle of all the cattails and swamp and what you would typically think of as the Everglades. Unfortunately by this point, I was so nauseous from morning all day sickness that I didn't enjoy it nearly as much.

Ewan, however, had a great time!

  7. I have driven accross the everglades a few times... We saw alligators at the side of the road. It was nuts! Wish we had done the national park -b/c it looks way more glorious than just driving across it!

  8. Holly, now finally I have been somewhere you have been lol! I used to live in Naples..The Everglades was my favorite place to go, better than the beach!! In fact, I lived in a screened in little hut for 2 weeks in the Glades when I moved to FL, until I found a place to live, no lie. Talk about scary walking through the bushes to pee at night!! I think I saw insects bigger than birds lol!

  9. It was really cool. I wish I wasn't as sick as I was - I also contracted norovirus during the trip - because I would've enjoyed it so much more.

  10. Me too! I'm glad that we got a real winter here finally, but I am so over the single digit temps.

  11. It was really cool. To get to the visitors' center in the middle of the state, you have to drive on US 41, where there are alligators on the side of the road. Being from Indiana, I've never seen anything like it.
