Blogging Isn't a Competition

Or is it? Sometimes I feel like it's a ridiculous competition and there's no way I can compete. We all want this or that opportunity and are left wondering why we didn't get it, or we're wondering why we've put years into our blog only to have the numbers someone who's been blogging 2 months has. I think every blogger has written a post somewhere that you should blog for you...which is true. But it's also nice to get the perks that come along with being a blogger too every now and then.

And Blogger v. Wordpress....don't even get me started on that one...ok well, now that I did start on it, I guess I am gonna go there :-) I'm so sick and tired of people telling me I must use this or that platform or commenting system. If you like Wordpress or Typepad or Blogger or whatever, then good for you! Use it and be happy with it, don't tear myself and my blog down because I don't use Wordpress and can't use your speshul snowflake commenting system. I'm perfectly happy on Blogger and have no intention of switching. A) I don't have the know how to do so B) Nor do I have the money to pay someone to switch everything for me C) I also don't have the money to purchase self-hosted Wordpress and D) I don't like change and if I'm happy with something, I tend to stick with it until I'm not. I just got in an unintentional argument about this actually, which inspired this post :-)

Also sometimes I feel like my posts have been copied by one blogger or another and that those bloggers do think it's a competition. It drives me crazy. I know that there's only so many things bloggers in my niche can blog about but when it comes across as you're trying to compete with other bloggers it's a little sad I think. Because while we are competing with each other to an extent - for things like sponsors, reviews, giveaways and other opportunities - who has the better post on a particular topic really shouldn't be a competition. It's great to share your successes, but not if you're purposefully trying to make others feel bad.

Oh yeah, also when you post something in a group or forum where people *should* reciprocate and they don't. That's just rude. I'm sorry, but if it happens often enough, you can bet that I'm not going to help you out anymore. Maybe that's too harsh of me, but if you don't scratch my back, then why should I scratch yours?

Aaaand....that's enough of my ramblings today. I had some other ramblings along these lines that I wanted to say, but it's lunchtime and they have completely gone out the window.

Hope everyone is having a better day than I am at the moment!

  4. I can't agree more. Bloggers get so catty and mean like this is a popularity contest and unfortunately it is but why do they have to revert to high school antics about it?? Love the post ;) can't agree more!

  6. I'm a competitive person myself, so I don't think that I will ever not feel this way to an extent, but I do try not to let it bother me, especially the page views part. It does bother me though when I see another blogger post on a topic I recently wrote about and there are exact sentences from my blog in there. While I haven't called them out on it, it does really make me mad. Think for yourself! Aaand end rant :-)

  7. I completely agree. It can be hard to maintain the right focus on why we became Bloggers. Yes, we all want the perks but we can still be nice to each other in the process. Great Post...everyone needs a vent moment (or post) sometimes :D

  9. Ahh! I haven't gotten on since August and it was a single item....then I got an email telling me I pre-qualified last week, only to take the survey and be told I don't really qualify. I think it's rigged :-)

Oh, like link parties and blog hops where you follow all the rules and start following the 20 hosts/cohosts/specialsnowflakes and then follow the 100 other people only to get like 5 follows for yourself?

Can you tell I'm a bit jaded with blog hops/link ups today? I've spent hours going to all the social media platforms and following people this week and it netted me all of like 20 new followers on Twitter and G+. I could have spent my time doing something else, like reading or making jewelry.

I started blogging because A) I talk a lot - you noticed this already, I assume - and B) to make friends. At least I can count "A" as getting done! lol

  12. Oh trust me, you're not alone on that one! In all honesty, that's why I do very few link ups anymore because they're not worth my time. Sad, but true unfortunately.

  13. Holly - Great blog post. Our town is over 100,000 and we don't have an old downtown area. My husband works as a planner for the city we live in and has been trying to get the downtown where it needs to be. It would be so great to see that here someday. We are praying for that. Blessings to you - Tina

  14. I love historic preservation. I go out of my way to shop in these charming places. Most are run by the sweetest mom & pop's ever. And personal service in a beautiful setting--can't beat it. Great article!
