Travel Thursday: Isla Roatan

Since it has been so ridiculously cold outside the last couple days, I thought that this week's Travel Thursday should be about someplace warm!

Isla Roatan, Honduras was a stop on the cruise Alan and I went on for our honeymoon. I have briefly mentioned it before but I wanted to talk about it in more detail since it was one of my favorite stops on the cruise.

We did one of the shore excursions, which was paddling a clear kayak along the second largest barrier reef in the world, followed by snorkeling through it. As a bonus, we went through the little zoo that was also there. I had never snorkeled before so I was very excited for the experience even though I was a little apprehensive. Some of you may know that I have a fear of fish, so we were a little worried how I would react swimming amongst them. However, I loved it! We had our waterproof digital camera and I had a blast taking photos of everything. It also didn't hurt that we saw maybe three fish :-)

Alan, however, didn't like it at all. He cut his knee on the coral at the beginning and had to swim with a bleeding knee through everything. Then when it was all over, they had him pour vinegar on it. Now, I definitely know the power of vinegar, but ouch! He has said on numerous occasions that that will be his first and last time snorkeling.

The little zoo was pretty cool. We got to be up close and personal with macaws, monkeys, lizards and all sorts of other animals.

As well as with the locals!

One of my favorite things about our adventure on Isla Roatan  (and Belize) is that we got to travel across the entire island, which allowed us to see not just the touristy areas, but how people truly live. It's definitely different than here in the US and it makes you grateful for what you do have.

Don't forget about my coconut oil giveaway from Tropical Traditions!

  1. Can I tell you again how much I love your Travel Thursday posts? I'm ready to grab my passport and go somewhere. (The fact that this post is about somewhere warm is even more motivation as I'm already tired of being cold...and it's been winter for one month.) I've never been to Honduras, but it looks gorgeous. That stinks about your husband having a bad experience snorkeling--I loved it so much when I first went that I came back and got my scuba diving license. No more having to stay at the surface! Also, I love your black tank top in the second to last picture--so much cuter than a regular black tank!

  2. Thank you so much for your kind words! It's always nice to know when someone appreciates your hard work :-) That tank is actually the top to my swimsuit. I basically lived in it on the cruise!

  3. You're so very welcome--I could talk travel all day, everyday, so it's awesome when I come across a blog that lets me indulge in my wanderlust just a little!

Seriously!?!? It's a bathing suit top? What an awesome, versatile piece!

  4. This gives me the worst case of wanderlust! The best snorkeling I've ever done was at a resort I stayed at in Cancun once. We just walked right into the ocean and right there were tons of fish, starfish, all sorts of cool stuff! It was awesome. A few years later we were in Jamaicia and paid $60 to go on a snorkeling charter and saw 1 fish! It was terrible! When you find a cool spot to snorkel it can be really awesome! Key West is great for that too! Sounds like a great time! Nice post!

  6. It took me a bit to get the hang of it. I panicked at first, but then it was really really cool. Where all are you going again? I hope you have a great time!

  7. I was honestly ok with only seeing a few fish because I didn't want to panic while swimming amongst them. Since I was able to handle that, maybe I'll be able to do it again when there are lots of fish :-)
