Travel Thursday: Birthday Edition

It's my birthday! Since it falls on a Thursday this year, I thought I would tell you about the time Alan surprised me with a trip to Washington DC for my birthday. He had arranged for us to go to ICE at National Harbor Saturday evening and then take a candlelit tour of Mount Vernon Sunday evening before heading back to Philly.

I had never heard of ICE before and it was really neat. It's basically a whole bunch of really intricate ice sculptures. The tent/building the sculptures are in is kept at a balmy 9 degrees so they give you these awesome blue coats to wear on top of your own winter gear :-)

I have been to Mount Vernon several times before, but never on a candlelit tour. Photos weren't allowed, but it was very romantic and I could just imagine what it would've been like on a cold winter's night.

It snowed on my actual birthday and we spent the afternoon exploring the Smithsonian museums on the mall. We also spent the day Sunday exploring. We saw the National Christmas Tree, went to a Christmas market and just walked around, enjoying the architecture.

This was by far one of my more memorable birthdays. I wonder what's in store for me today... :-)

  1. Hope you had a great birthday! Seeing an ice sculpture is one of those things on my bucket list. This looks like it was a lot of fun!

  2. Thank you! While it was freezing, I really liked ICE. Definitely something different. It's at all Gaylord Resort hotels, so there might be something near you.
