Before Cecily was born the day after our wedding anniversary, Alan and I used to take long weekend trips to celebrate it. The last trip we took was to the Lake Lure area of North Carolina, about an hour outside of Asheville.
We stayed at the resort where Dirty Dancing was filmed and I'm pretty sure I recognized several locations from the movie. It was my favorite movie when I was five, afterall. We did explore the area some, but we used our condo as our base to explore numerous places during our trip.
We went to Grandfather Mountain, where we were going to cross an extremely high pedestrian suspension bridge. However, it looked like this when we got to the top of the mountain.
It was snowing, cold and ridiculously windy and there was no way I was crossing that thing! We decided to head back to Lake Lure and explore several of the little towns in the area and climbed Chimney Rock instead, where it looked like this on the same day.
We took a day to explore Asheville since it was on my list of places to visit. We did this art trail, where you found various sculptures that told you the history of the city.
We also spent a day at Biltmore, which was the highlight of my trip. We studied the architect who designed the house in grad school and it has been a place I had wanted to see ever since.
To be honest, I wasn't that big of a fan of Asheville. It felt like it was too trendy and trying way too hard. As Alan said, we felt out of place because we weren't standing on a street corner trying to perform. I'm glad I went, but it's not somewhere I would necessarily want to visit again. However, the Lake Lure area is beautiful and I would love to go back!
