My Health Revolution

If you follow me on Pinterest or on Instagram, then you probably already know what I've been up to for the past six weeks. But, if not let me tell you about my health revolution.

Six weeks ago today, I began a 21 day sugar detox with a bunch of women here in my town. We support each other through a Facebook group and it's been really great to connect with them because they are going through the same things around the same time during the detox. Did you know that sugar is more addicting than cocaine? I had become completely out of control with my sweets, which is why I decided to do the detox.

Salsa verde chicken, wax beans and brown rice.
I put myself on the highest level of the detox, which, in addition to the obvious sugary and fried foods, didn't allow grains, legumes, potatoes, corn, peanut butter, soy or dairy. After the first week, I did add in one full fat serving of dairy and a cup of brown rice a day to help maintain my milk supply because my pumping output had dropped. I'm not going to lie, at first it was incredibly difficult to stick to this because the sugar cravings were crazy intense. I also had a few detox symptoms, such as a headache and it being really hard to focus for a few days - which made my presentation to the history department at my undergrad very interesting!

However, once I got through that first week, it was amazing! The crazy bloat that made me still look six months pregnant was gone, I also didn't feel like I was going to pass out after lunch. Probably the best thing of all is that my horrible, debilitating back pain that has brought me to tears on many occasions was gone. Nothing, and I mean nothing has helped me with this pain, except to get rid of sugar. Believe me, I know it sounds crazy that getting rid of sugar would help my back pain, I would think it was too except that it's my body and it did work. Sugar and the candida associated with it, is actually a major cause of inflammation and all sorts of other things (like depression and anxiety) you wouldn't necessarily think could be caused by consuming it. It's crazy because I can totally tell a difference when I do have sugar - Ifeel buzzed and my back starts hurting again.

Another added benefit of doing the detox was that I lost 12 lbs during the three weeks. If getting rid of my back pain wasn't enough to make me stick to this, then the weight loss definitely is. Eight years ago, I lost just over 50 lbs by doing Weight Watchers. However, nothing, including Weight Watchers, has worked to help me lose weight since the birth of my children. The detox and now following the paleo diet are the only things that have worked. I have since lost 18 lbs and counting and am loving every second. It's so nice to finally feel like I'm getting my body back after not one but two kids.

Do I eat this way 100% of the time? No, it's

probably more like 85/15. I did enjoy the food at Cecily's party, which was definitely not paleo, I also enjoyed some deep fried cookie dough at my town's fall street fair and I have had a piece or two of Halloween candy. But, I have felt horrible each time after eating these foods. This is definitely a permanent lifestyle for me and I do still get to enjoy things like cookies and banana bread. They're just the paleo versions and I find that I prefer them to the sugar laden originals now.

My friends and family that haven't done the detox probably think I'm nuts, but trust me, it is amazing!

If you ever want to know more about the sugar detox or the paleo diet, please ask. I love to spread the word about my health revolution!
